Independence Boulevard lane closures may impact Christiansburg High School traffic

Since June, the Town of Christiansburg has been working with a contractor to extend turn lane lengths at the intersection of Independence Boulevard and North Franklin Street, in an effort to improve traffic flow. Construction was initially expected to be substantially complete by late summer to avoid impacting school traffic, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the work will continue throughout the month of August.

Students return to Christiansburg High School on Aug. 9. Please be advised that at that time, traffic on Independence Boulevard will be restricted to one lane in both directions. The turn lanes from North Franklin Street onto Independence Boulevard will remain open, but once on Independence, lane closures will be in effect and are expected to continue through the end of the month.

Christiansburg Police officers will be on site on Aug. 9 to monitor the impact on traffic and adjust traffic control plans as necessary. All entrances and exits to and from the school are expected to remain open, but motorists should expect congestion and delays.

Commuters and residents who use the intersection are being asked to seek alternate routes when traveling in the area, particularly at the times students arrive at school (between 7:30-8:05 a.m.) and depart (between 2:45-3:15 p.m.).

While this project ultimately aims to assist motorists in getting through the intersection quicker, please expect delays as construction wraps up. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that motorists drive carefully through the work zone.
