• Have you filled a swimming pool and/or using water slide, etc.? • Have you been watering the lawn, garden, etc.?
• Have you had extra people in the home?
Each adult consumes an average of 4000 gallons of water per billing period.
• Do you have a dripping faucet or showerhead?
• Do you have a toilet leak? Have you heard the toilet running?
Check by flushing the toilet.
Let the tank fill back up.
Turn the shut-off valve underneath tank off.
Make a pencil mark in the tank at the water level.
Leave all day or over night.
Check when you get home or the next morning.
If water level has fallen below the pencil mark, water is leaking at the flapper in the bottom of the tank. • Check the hot water heater for leaks from the pressure relief valve.
• Check for wet spots on the basement floor or in the crawl space.
• Check for wet soft spots in the yard between the meter and the house.
You must have a permit to fix leaks between the house and the meter.
Get the leak fixed and call us back (540) 382-9519) so we can check the meter readings to ensure the problem has been resolved and get a reading.
Call back to check on the meter reading to see if we determined the leak was resolved.
Provide the Town with a copy of the receipt or a letter stating what the leak was and when it was repaired.
Call the Town back before your bill is due to obtain the adjusted amount on the bill.
Once your personal property taxes become 60 days past due they are subject to an additional $30.00 penalty fee and restrictions on your records at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

2. If the weather is very cold for several days, you could have frozen water lines. Please call the Town Hall and we can check if the water is frozen at the meter.
3. Sometimes the Town has to work on the main water lines and will disconnect water to a section of residences. Please call the Town Hall to see if we are working on or near your street.
1. Flush the toilet and allow the tank to refill.2. Once the tank is full, turn off the intake valve under the toilet so no more water comes in.3. Make a pencil mark at the water level inside the tank (not the bowl).4. Let the toilet sit all day (if you are gone during the day) or overnight. Make sure the toilet is not used during that time.5. After that period of time, check the water level in the tank. If the water level has dropped below the pencil mark, there is a leak at the flapper seal at the bottom of the tank and it will need to be replaced.
If you have more than one toilet in the residence, you can do the check on all the toilets but one, leaving it free for use, and then check the one after all the others have been checked.
Should you find a leak, do make arrangements for repair as soon as possible. Keep your receipts or invoices as we will need a copy for our records. Contact the Town Hall at (540) 382-9519 to notify us of your leak and/or repair.
