Stormwater What is it? Stormwater is a term used to describe the water that accumulates on land through precipitation events, such as rain or snowfall. Water is accumulated when it is unable to soak into the ground. Because impermeable surfaces (parking lots, roads, rooftops, etc.) do not allow water to infiltrate the ground, this water then becomes surface runoff which is directed by channels into storm sewers that lead to holding ponds, lakes, streams, and rivers. The amount of runoff and the quality of water running into our steams and lakes are the two major concerns when dealing with this topic. During severe rainfall or melting snow, the water unable to soak into the ground needs to go somewhere. Keeping drains clear of debris can help water drain more quickly and efficiently to help prevent flooding. Nonpoint source pollution deals with runoff that picks up natural and human-made pollutants. Ensuring chemicals and other pollutants stay away from runoff will help keep our waters safe. The Town of Christiansburg maintains several programs to aid in disposing of trash and keeping our streets and waters free of pollutants.
