"What do I do with
large bulky items such as old furniture, appliances, or tree/shrubbery trimmings
that I want to discard? Can I place those out for collection with my
regular weekly trash pickup?" |
 |
|
|
 |
These items will
only be collected during the annual Spring and Fall cleanup weeks sponsored by
the Town of Christiansburg. The first two weeks of APRIL and the first two
weeks of OCTOBER are (generally) the designated cleanup weeks when we will
collect your large items free of charge (including old furniture, appliances
[limit of 2], tires [limit of 4], and tree/shrubbery trimmings [no larger than
4" in diameter].
If you desire a
pick-up at other times during the year, the Town charges fees per truckload plus
any applicable landfill tipping fees. Otherwise, please check your water
bill statement, the local newspaper, or call our office (382-6128) to verify the
dates of the annual clean-up weeks. |

"I
am renovating my home and need to have the drywall, lumber, and other
construction materials removed. Will the Town pick that up?" |
 |
|

Construction materials or
similar debris are not considered to be typical residential debris, and due to
safety precautions, will not be collected by the Town.

"I would like to
dispose of some oil-based paint left over from a home project, as well as
some used antifreeze and motor oil. Can this go with my regular trash for
pickup?" |
 |
|
|
 |
Any materials which may be
considered toxic or hazardous should NOT be included with your regular trash to
be taken to the landfill. As these materials break down, they
release toxins into the ground and groundwater system which could end up in the
streams that help feed your water supply. The Town of Christiansburg, Town
of Blacksburg, and Montgomery County host a Hazardous Waste Collection Day each
May when you can drop-off your used antifreeze, solvents, chemicals,
pesticides, and other hazardous materials free-of-charge. Save those
materials and check the calendar of events to see when the next collection day
is scheduled. Also, there is an Annual Paint Exchange day held in May each
year
where residents can bring left-over usable latex-based paints from household
projects. Residents who need paint can pick up the paint donated by other
residents free-of-charge.

What is the Town's snow removal policy? |
 |
|
|
 |
The Town strives to clear
snow/ice from every street as soon as possible, but there is an order to which
streets we must concentrate on first. Depending on the amount of everyday
traffic on your street, you may be one of the first streets we get to or one of
the last. The general priorities for snow removal are as follows:
Primary Roads - These are the
streets which have the highest daily traffic counts. These roads include,
but are not limited to, Roanoke Street (Rt. 11/U.S 460 - from the Town Hall to
the Town limits), North Franklin Street (U.S. 460 Business - from the Town
Square to Cambria Street), East and West Main Street (Rt. 11/U.S. 460; Rt. 8 -
from the Town Hall to the Town limits), Peppers Ferry Road (Rt. 114 - from U.S.
460 Bypass to the Town limits), and Radford Street (Rt. 11 - From West Main Street to
the Town Limits).
The Virginia Dept. of Transportation (VDOT) handles snow
removal on the U.S. 460 Bypass from I-81 to the North Town limits and U.S. 460
Business from Cambria Street to the North Town Limits.
Arterial Streets - These
streets contain a high volume of traffic connecting Primary roads and/or
leading to highly populated areas.
Secondary Roads (Subdivision
Streets)- These are the
roads with the lowest volume of traffic. Typically, thru streets will be
cleared before dead end/cul-de-sac streets

"I
want to fill my pool for the summer, but do not want to be charged for sewer
fees that are levied based on water usage. What can I do?" |
 |
|
|
 |
The Town offers residents a
pool meter which counts the number of gallons used to fill your pool, and that
quantity will be deducted from the sewer portion of your bill upon return.
Please contact Eddie Smith, Public Works Clerk, at 382-6128 and schedule to
pick up a pool meter. Meters are available for a 72-hour loan period
with a $25 deposit that will be refunded if returned on-time and in working
order.

"There
is a new sewer line being constructed in my area. Am I required to hook
on? |
 |
|
|
 |
You are
required to hook on to Town sewer if your new residence/business is built in an
area where service is available.
If a
new sewer line is being constructed in the area of your existing
residence/business, you will be notified when sewer service is available.
Once available, you may continue to use your current septic system until it
fails or requires service (pumping septic tank, etc.). At that time,
you are required to connect to Town sewer. |
