The Christiansburg Planning and Zoning Department assists the public and local businesses by guiding them through requirements for advertising, zoning and land use.

These responsibilities include the review of site plans and subdivision plats, inspection of setbacks, enforcing outdoor advertising (signs) and the Zoning Ordinance. 

In addition, the Planning and Zoning Department serves as staff for the Town of Christiansburg Planning Commission and Christiansburg Board of Zoning Appeals. In this role, the department accepts applications for public hearings (including rezonings, Conditional Use Permits and variances).

Internship Program Objectives

The Town of Christiansburg's Planning Department strives to provide students with first hand knowledge of municipal land use planning and code enforcement in local government.The program works to give interns every opportunity for on the job experience, learning exercises and professional feedback.

How many internships are available through the Planning Department?
Please keep in mind that though your application materials may be strong, the Planning Department only accepts one intern per term.

Who can apply for a Planning internship?
Internships with the Planning Department are open to both graduate and undergraduate students.

What types of projects will I work on?
Interns can expect to work on a number of projects that vary in size and scope. Interns can expect to assist in the day to day functions of the Planning Department, which include responsibilities related to outdoor advertising, planning, subdivision review, zoning and more. Other projects may involve ordinance enforcement, the comprehensive plan, and transportation projects.

Example Duties: 
In the past, interns have worked on the following items: 
  • Sign inventory
  • High grass and junk/debris violations
  • Shadow senior staff on inspections and site plan review
  • Perform parking inspections for Business Occupancy applications and Zoning Compliance letters
  • Ordinance research
  • Process Home Occupation application 
  • Perform Conditional Use Permit compliance
  • Customer service
