Additional Information: A Latin-inspired dance and tone fitness program. The class will emphasize muscle work along with rhythms, this combination of cardio and dynamic resistance exercises is an effective way to tone and shape the whole body. (1-3 pound weights will be used).

LIFTING 101   

Eligibility: Ages 16 and over    Location: Christiansburg Recreation Center – Weightroom               

Additional Information:  This class is for new and beginning weightlifters interested in learning the proper technique for strength training. In this class, we will learn and practice the proper form, movements, and range of motion associated with bench press, squats, deadlifts, (overhead) presses, and rows. FITNESS ASSESSMENT    

Eligibility: Ages 16 and over    Location: Christiansburg Recreation Center – Weightroom               

Additional Information:  During this session, participants will be assessed using four types of fitness assessment: (1) Static Postural, (2) Overhead Squat, (3) Push/Pull, and (4) Cardio Assessment. These assessments are a good basis for beginning a new fitness program. The assessments, measurement, and results will be discussed with participants. In addition, participants will receive a summary of their assessment results via email.

MINDFULLNESS MEDITATION     

Location: Multipurpose Room 1   Ages 18 & over
Additional Information: Mindfulness Meditation is a mental training practice that teaches you to slow down racing thoughts, let go of negativity, and calm both your mind and body. The aim of meditation is to connect with your present moment experience. Participants let go of the thoughts, emotions, feelings or sensations by simply being there without trying to avoid or fix anything. Participants must provide their own exercise mat for classes. A cushion or blanket would also work for this program.

TONING AND CONDITIONING

Additional Information: Intense exercise class for all fitness levels with low to no impact and minimal choreography. Use of elastic resistance bands, weights and body supported exercises and flexibility training for muscle strengthening, endurance and sculpting. Must bring your own mat and water bottle.

TAI CHI FUNDAMENTALS     

Eligibility: Ages 18 and over  Location: Christiansburg Recreation Center – Multi-Purpose Room 1                             Additional Information: This class teaches the basic movements and mindfulness skills needed to progress in Tai Chi practice.  Students in this class will learn the traditional movement sets known as Hunyuan Gong (Essential Skills), Chansi Gong (Silk Reeling Skills) and the Tai Chi 13 Movement Form.  These practices help to build and maintain functional strength and range of motion, while improving relaxation, balance, coordination and ease of movement.
