Brown, Church and Lucas Streets: Storm Drain Improvements

Contractors began work November 1, 2016, on the initial phase of storm drain improvements in the area of Brown, Church and Lucas Streets. This project – which consisted of installing storm drains, sanitary sewer pipe, four sanitary sewer manholes and 16 stormwater structures –addresses roadway and private property flooding issues in the area. Construction was completed in Spring 2017.

The total project cost for this initial phase was approximately $1 million. The Virginia Department of Transportation contributed funds through a revenue-sharing grant, with a 50 percent match from the Town. The Town's portion came from the stormwater utility enterprise fund.

The second phase of storm drain improvements will extend the project area toward Cambria Street and Ellett Road.

This is a photo of vegetated outfall. This outfall was constructed using Turf Reinforcement Matting to provide natural cover and a lower maintenance stormwater outfall when compared to traditional rock outfall protection.
