Internship and Volunteer Opportunities
Are you interested in an internship or volunteer opportunity with the Town of Christiansburg? There are opportunities within several different departments at the Town of Christiansburg. Depending upon the department, internships and volunteer positions may or may not be compensated. Internships with the Town of Christiansburg are open to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Departments with Internship and Volunteer Programs
Engineering & GIS
The Town of Christiansburg’s Engineering Department offers internships in both their Engineering and GIS divisions. Each division strives to provide interns with real-world experience in local government. Currently, the Engineering Department only accepts one intern per term, per division. The types of projects interns will work on will vary according to the needs of each division and the individual intern.
Parks and Recreation
Christiansburg Parks and Recreation offers General Intern and Marketing/Graphic Design Intern positions which work to provide the community with leisure and recreation programs that increase the quality of life. Interns will be given every opportunity for hands-on experience and professional feedback. Please keep in mind that though your application materials may be strong, Parks and Recreation only accepts 1-2 interns per term. At Christiansburg Parks and Recreation, no day is the same, so projects may vary. Projects may include brochures, flyers, web updates and/or strategic marketing plans to improve information distribution to clientele, organizing and operating youth athletic leagues, scheduling of officials, managing a variety of special events, managing and supervising senior and community programs, overseeing youth camps and clinics, help with the operation of the Christiansburg Recreation Center, Harkrader Sports Complex and any other recreational items that may be deemed necessary for the success of the intern and department. In addition to internships, Parks and Recreation offers a variety of volunteer opportunities.
Planning
The Christiansburg Planning and Zoning Department assists the public and local businesses by guiding them through requirements for advertising, zoning and land use. The Planning Department strives to provide students with first hand knowledge of municipal land use planning and code enforcement in local government. The program works to give interns every opportunity for on the job experience, learning exercises and professional feedback. Please keep in mind that though your application materials may be strong, the Planning Department only accepts one intern per term. Interns can expect to work on a number of projects that vary in size and scope. Interns can expect to assist in the day to day functions of the Planning Department, which include responsibilities related to outdoor advertising, planning, subdivision review, zoning and more. Other projects may involve ordinance enforcement, the comprehensive plan, and transportation projects.
Aquatics
Our staff is committed to the involvement of volunteers and interns to reach both the vision and mission of the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. The goal is to provide a meaningful, supportive, and educational experience for all. Projects and responsibilities will vary and be tailored depending upon the current opportunities available and intern coursework requirements.
Rescue
