Christiansburg Town Council has voted to reopen Hickok Street NW, which has been closed since July 2018.
Hickok Street NW, from Main Street to Commerce Street, will reopen on Tuesday, March 17, by end of day. Town crews will remove the yellow bollards that have been in place since the permanent closure in 2018, as well as the festival lighting, and the street will reopen to two-way traffic.
The street will continue to close each Thursday from May 21 to October 22 for the Christiansburg Farmers Market. There will be other special events throughout the year that will also temporarily close the street.
Hickok Street was originally closed to provide a community gathering space downtown outside of the weekly Farmers Market, and in closing the street, the Town and community partners introduced additional programming and events throughout the year in the space. The street was also closed to prepare residents for a 2019 capital project that would necessitate the roadway being closed. However, with funding delays, the storm drainage project is now expected to begin later than anticipated. Christiansburg Town Council decided to reopen Hickok Street until that project gets underway. Once construction begins, Hickok Street will again be permanently closed from Main Street to Commerce Street and will remain closed for the duration of the project.
