[ARCHIVED] Annual paving work to begin soon on several streets throughout town

Orange "road work ahead" sign

Contracted crews will soon begin operations on several streets throughout Christiansburg as part of the Town’s annual paving program to improve riding surfaces for residents.

The following streets are scheduled for paving in the upcoming weeks: Radford Road (from W. Main to town limits); N. Franklin Street (from Water to Commerce); Beaver Drive (from Badger to Silver Lake); Oak Tree Boulevard; Tall Oak Drive; and Windsong Lane.

Milling and paving work on Radford Road (from Depot Street to West Main) and N. Franklin Street will occur overnight, beginning May 31. Work on the other streets listed above (including Radford Road from Depot Street to town limits) will occur during the day, and the contractor will begin as crews are available. Because the schedule is based on crew availability, we are unable to provide an exact timeline; however, work on all streets is expected to be complete by June 30. The contractor will place out “No Parking” and other signage to alert residents of the upcoming paving at least 48 hours before they begin operations on the street. Residents who live in the work zone areas will receive letters alerting them to this work.

The contractor plans on closing the affected portion of N. Franklin Street during overnight paving operations and will have a detour in place. The street will reopen during the day.

Road closures are not expected on the other streets, but there may be minor traffic delays. Motorists will be able to travel in both directions during the duration of the paving, with one lane of traffic closed at a time. Driveways and entryways on the roads will remain open, unless temporarily blocked as crews move down the road.

The Town includes funds in its budget each year for annual paving, with the goal of maintaining and improving Christiansburg’s roadways. More than $1 million of paving will be completed during this project. The Town is also receiving funds from the Virginia Department of Transportation through its primary extension paving program.
