Hickok Street Stream Diversion and Upcoming Construction

The Town of Christiansburg announces the upcoming installation of a temporary stream diversion as part of the Hickok Street Storm Drainage Improvements project. The work is scheduled to begin the week of December 2, 2024, weather permitting.

Beginning Dec. 2, Hickok Street will be closed between College Street and Commerce Street. Additionally, a portion of Commerce Street near its intersection with Hickok Street will also be closed during this period. Traffic signs will be in place and certain parking spaces will be inaccessible. Residents and visitors who typically park in this area are encouraged to seek alternative parking locations.

Workers will be present during the installation, which is expected to take approximately five days. Local residents will still have access to their homes and businesses during this time. Trash collection and mail services will continue without interruption, and emergency vehicles will maintain access to the area. The Town will provide updates if the schedule changes due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Looking Ahead

This temporary diversion is a necessary step to safely manage water flow while preparing for major construction activities. The stream diversion is part of a larger infrastructure improvement project set to begin in the coming months. Once construction begins, major portions of Commerce Street and Hickok Street will be closed, and parking will be displaced for an extended period. Commuters are strongly encouraged to plan ahead to avoid the area and find alternative parking options throughout the duration of the project.
